What Is AFO?

An ankle-foot orthosis, or AFO, is support intended to control the position and motion of the ankle, compensate for weakness, or correct deformities. AFOs can be used to support weak limbs or to position a limb with contracted muscles into a more normal position. In addition, AFOs are used to control foot drops caused by a variety of neurologic and musculoskeletal disorders.

Who will Wear AFO

In Case of Child Having

Cerebral palsy,

Valgus and Varus deformity of the foot,

Foot drop,

 Flexible contracture of the ankle,

CTEV and TA tightness etc.

(Carbon Fibre AFO)

Incase of Adult Having complications like

Stroke, Spinal cord injury, Poliomyelitis, Brain Injury, Hemiplegia, also diabetes, Weakness of knee muscles.

Types of AFO

Child/Paediatric AFO and Adult AFO

In case of child / Paediatric use   

 A solid ankle AFO, Dynamic/Hinged/Articulated AFO, Ground Reaction AFO,3D Printed AFO

In case of Adult

Solid Ankle AFO, Posterior Leaf Spring AFO, Cabon Fibre AFO, Ground Reaction AFO& 3d Printed AFO

(SAFO)

Benefits of AFO

The goal of AFO use is to stabilize the foot and ankle and provide toe clearance during the swing phase of gait. 

Provide 3 point forces so that Correct the deformity,

Maintain the Deformity so that it can not increase further,

Maintain physiological gait,

Prevent excessive movement so that it can prevent deformity

Maintain the centre of gravity in position so that balance would be maintained.

In case of diabetes protect the foot so no further wound

In case of trauma maintain the muscle tone so that it can prevent further toughness/contracture

Helps in foot drop, AFO helps decrease the risk of catching the toe and falling.
